![]() ![]() Especially recommended to the mobile musician, the Oxygen 8 v2 is a great buy. ![]() The build quality of the hardware is brilliant, it's great fun to play with and offers a depth belied by its simple appearance. ![]() While this new Oxygen 8 isn't quite as revolutionary as its predecessor, there can be no denying it offers a lot of bang for your buck. The package hangs together well despite the slight learning curve issue, and the Lite version of Ableton Live 4 is included so you can get tweaking right away. The manual doesn't go out of its way to ease the beginner - a few tutorials would be more useful - and Enigma could do with a 'basic' mode for one-click bank loading, though it's still fairly simple. The only downside is that the package isn't as user-friendly as it could be. Once a preset is complete it is transferred via SysEx to the v2, which is a painless process. The downloadable Enigma software - which isn't included on the CD and only receives passing mention in the manual - comes with controller values for a variety of other instruments, though each parameter has to be dragged individually onto a graphic representation of the controller. The unit has ten memory positions that come preloaded with set-ups for various instruments and a couple of Reason set-ups. For such a simple looking machine, the v2 is rather deep and offers the ability to switch between different velocity response curves, assign CC values to each knob and send out bank change messages - handy for the live musician. The keys are full size and have a great response, and the pitch bend wheel snaps back into position in a satisfyingly brisk manner.Īt the centre of the controller is the simple LED that is used in conjunction with the buttons below to switch between different modes. It's located above the key bed along with the pitch bend and modulation wheels in a clever space-saving move. The keyboard is a dinky little 25-key affair, but at least the octave switch is accessible. You could chuck it in your rucksack or record bag along with your packed lunch without worrying about getting a hernia or snapping off a joystick, so it definitely gets a thumbs up on the portability front. The unit is light, even for its small size, and the lack of anything that looks breakable or a cumbersome power supply makes it portable indeed. Despite the fact it's made entirely out of plastic, the v2 looks great, and is certainly a hell of a lot nicer than the old version. Gone is the vaguely unattractive old styling, replaced by a chunky design with a tasteful silver, grey and orange colour scheme. You can also expand on the functions of the Oxygen range by downloading the Enigma software editor and librarian. Though it remains physically solid, those drivers are out of date. ![]() Therein lies the issue with using it in 2020. Unlike more recent class-compliant hardware, software drivers were required for macOS 9 and Windows 98 and higher. Class-compliancy with Windows XP and Mac OS X means that you can get down to business without even installing any drivers. Given how much gear I’ve amassed since 2002, it’s amazing that the Oxygen 8 has survived. One simple USB connection serves as both a MIDI interface and bus-power source. The 49- and 61-note models also include 9 fully assignable buttons and 9 assignable sliders for performance and programming. The Oxygen keyboards come with 25, 49, or 61 full-size, velocity-sensitive keys and eight fully assignable knobs, with 6 fully assignable Transport buttons. The Oxygen keyboards offer diverse controls and all the programming features and functions you will need to develop your MIDI studio. This is a pretty average Midi keyboard, nothing special at all, velocity sensitive non weighted keys, USB connection with a MIDI out a 1/4' sustain pedal jack. Congratulations on purchasing an Oxygen keyboard from M-Audio. It is a basic 25 key MIDI keyboard with 8 Knobs A pitch bend and modulation wheel and some other various buttons. ![]()
